Clinical Youth Specialist — City of Somerville

Department: Health and Human Services


The CLINICAL YOUTH SPECIALIST position is responsible for analyzing and diagnosing individuals across life span, and utilizes clinical judgment to assess individual and group needs to make recommendations in relation but not limited to unexpected circumstances and sudden loss. This position is also responsible for program development, training, and data analysis. 

Essential Functions:

  • Provides consultation and guidance for areas including but not limited to suicide prevention, trauma response, and mental health
  • Develop and customize trainings to address group or departmental needs in relation to mental health or at risk youth and families
  • Attend and participate in various mental health community meetings
  • Provide consultation, training, and group facilitation to various City departments, schools, and Community Groups to address concerns around areas including but not limited to mental health/wellness, substance use/abuse, and suicide prevention
  • Provide leadership to the Somerville Trauma Response Network to respond when a traumatic events occur within the city
  • Supervise student interns
  • Develop new prevention programs as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Recommended Minimum Qualifications                                                  

Education and Experience: Master’s degree and five to seven (5-7) years’ experience in social work or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job

Special Requirements:

  • Must either be a Licensed Social Worker or a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Licensed Individual Clinical Social Worker preferred.
  • Master’s Degree required.
  • Must hold a current valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

Knowledge:  Knowledge of federal, state and local public health regulations; working knowledge of public health issues and prevention programs.

Ability:  Ability to work independently; ability to analyze, diagnose, assess and make applicable recommendations for individuals or groups; ability to evaluate and monitor community and environmental health projects. Must be able to travel to multiple locations.

Skills:  Public speaking skills; planning and organizational skills; supervisory skills; computer skills.


Work Environment                                                                                          

The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements.  Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.  Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments.Requirements:

Physical Skills

Few physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing.  May also be some occasional lifting of objects such as office equipment and computer paper (up to 30 lbs.)

Motor Skills

Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, filing and sorting of papers.
