Licensed Social Worker-Bilingual Chinese Speaker

Newton Housing Authority (NHA) is seeking a passionate, qualified candidate to fill a newly created Licensed Social Worker position. NHA is a government housing provider that services low-income families, persons with disabilities, and older adults in Newton, MA. NHA has provided affordable housing to its diverse population of more than 1300 residents for over 50 years and is the largest provider of affordable housing in the City of Newton.

With support from the Executive Team and The Board of Directors, NHA’s Resident Services Department has grown over the past three years to become more clinically focused and to utilize evidence-based practices to support and work with tenants. The Director of Resident Services is an LCSW and is passionate about using effective, evidence based strategies to engage and serve residents. The Director of Resident Services uses Motivational Interviewing as a primary intervention method and would support the individual who steps into this role in her learning of this clinical style.

The Ideal Candidate:
The Licensed Social Worker will join the Resident Services Department and provide supportive clinical and recreation services to tenants in NHA’s housing programs.

The Licensed Social Worker who would be an ideal fit for this role is someone who is interested and passionate about the intersection between social welfare, affordable housing, aging services, and cross-cultural programming and who sees herself practicing “mezzo” social work. Similarly, the person who would most enjoy this role, is someone who would feel comfortable visiting clients in their home or traveling to NHA’s multiple properties in Newton to provide services.

The individual that fills this role will have the unique and exciting opportunity to co-develop outreach and engagement strategies to Chinese residents. Chinese residents are currently underserved by the Resident Services Department due to linguistic barriers and a lack of cross-cultural recreation activities. The social worker that steps into this role should have cross-cultural expertise with Chinese populations and should be interested in building relationships with Chinese residents. The social worker that fills this role will have a strong voice in developing the Resident Services Department to meet the needs of Chinese residents.

Finally, NHA’s Resident Services Department has a spectrum of opportunities for a new social worker to try out programs, ideas, or approaches that would better serve residents. The ideal candidate would be someone who is visionary, interested and willing to try out new ideas, and a self-starter.

Benefits and Salary:
This position belongs to the AFSCME Council 93 union. This position has great health insurance and dental benefit options. This position honors compensatory time and provides mileage reimbursement for travel. The position’s salary range is between $48,000-$54,000. Experience and language expertise will be taken into account.

Position Description
Licensed Social Worker

Plan, manage and provide social services to Newton Housing Authority residents under the direction of the Director of Resident Services.

Perform psychosocial assessments when required and develop individualized action plans, including goals and a means of monitoring progress.

Develop and implement social and recreational activities for residents in elderly and family housing under the director of the Director of Resident Services.

Respond to crisis referrals and situations, providing written follow-up to the Director of Resident Services and Executive Director.

Develop and utilize networks of social and clinical services to assist residents in meeting identified needs.

Provide case management services, including, but not limited to, issues with housekeeping and hoarding behaviors, household budgeting and economic self-sufficiency.

Assist residents by producing informational materials, including monthly newsletters for elders and families.

Assist tenants in preparing any necessary forms or documentation needed to take advantage of social welfare programs.

Serve as mediator for tenant dispute resolution as required.

Supervise and direct volunteers as required.

Assist tenants with arrangement of transportation for social and personal needs.

Serve as authority representative at tenant meetings as needed.

Assist with writing, researching and preparing grant and donation applications, maintain records or activities and perform required for grant reporting.

Attend pertinent meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, or any other housing or resident services-oriented presentation.

Solicit donations for programs.

Perform other related duties as required or requested.

Education and Skills:
• Candidates must have their LCSW or LICSW and have personal transportation
• Fluency in Mandarin highly preferred
