Assistant Director, Family Services

For nearly four decades, Heading Home has effectively pioneered programs to end homelessness in Greater Boston. As our name reflects, we believe that a stable home provides the optimal foundation to get back on track, so our programs focus heavily on assessment, engagement, individual goal-setting and securing permanent housing for our clients as quickly as possible. We provide emergency, transitional and permanent housing and support services such as life skills, financial literacy, and job training to low-income homeless and formerly homeless families and individuals. Our model of providing housing together with critical services works: for nine consecutive years, at least 90% of the residents in our permanent housing programs have remained successfully housed a year later and in 2014 in particular, 95% remained housed – an all-time high.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director, Family Services will work closely with the Director of Family Services to provide oversight and direction of the program, and to ensure ongoing and direct support to program managers and their staff. In this newly created role, s/he will support the work of the Family Services Team by designing, implementing, and evaluating programs. A successful Assistant Director, Family Services will approach his/her work with an eye for developing increased coordination of Family Services programming and establishing systems in alignment with Heading Home’s mission and current contracts.   • Build, lead, and inspire a diverse team towards aggressive goals while maintaining positive team culture, particularly during times of organizational growth and change
  • Provide regular supervision, support, and targeted professional development for Program Managers within Family Services Team
  • Oversee program logistics, project and meeting management, document preparation and distribution, and report development and communications
  • Partner with the Director of Family Services to assure consistency across programs related to availability of resources and program effectiveness
  • Assist in program assessment and collaborate with Director, Family Services to develop and implement recommendations for program shifts and new program design
  • Work with agency data coordinator to create internal tracking mechanisms and assure data collection and quality across Family Services Team; ensure accurate and consistent use of information systems, holding staff accountable for its use while also providing technical support as needed 
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal laws; Support the Assistant Director for Contract Compliance with DHCD reporting, Select Income REIT filings, safety plans, and other compliance-related responsibilities
  • Perform all other relevant tasks as requested by the Executive Team


  • 10 years of experience in a human services setting with progressive leadership experience in program design, implementation, and evaluation (ideally focusing on family or individual homelessness, and/or mental health and drug addiction), ideally with strategic leadership responsibility for a large multi-program department during a time of change or growth 
  • Ability to manage teams and individuals with a collaborative approach in order to reach ambitious goals and results through direct support and professional development, particularly with staff members who are providing direct services to clients
  • Highly developed interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; adept at working with and relating to diverse constituents in a fast-paced, urgent environment 
  • Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working with homeless and/or low-income populations
  • Experience with or ability to grasp sound social work and coaching concepts such as Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Informed Care, and/or Bridge to Self-Sufficiency
  • Thrive in a culture that is dynamic, mission-driven and client-centric, on a team which values results, flexibility, and initiative; embody and act as a steward for Heading Home’s mission and its Housing First model in interactions with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle required
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree in relevant field preferred
